The top view of the resin coaster. The gold line was later traced on the copper resin.

I have just started doing resin art last May 2020 and I have still so much to learn. This resin coaster I made fell below my expectations. I used about 40 grams of 2-part epoxy resin. For the outer part (A), I used Focus Acrylic in Mauve and mixed it with purple mica powder. For the inner part (B), I used a blue iridescent mica powder mixed with 2 drops violet alcohol ink and 1 drop of red to make it a bit purple. For the center part, I used clear resin mixed with gold foil (C). I also mixed copper mica to resin (D) and used it to line around the coaster which I have since traced with a gold permanent marker to simulate a structure because every color seems to have merged too much.

It seemed ok until I poured the white resin.

The white resin poured on the outer part did two things: it failed to merge with the alcohol ink+iridiescent resin (B) and then it pushed down the copper resin (D) . I was hoping it that the white part would continue to branch towards the center. I poured white resin around the gold foil+resin core (E), creating a ring which ate though the alcohol ink part. So I poured more alcohol ink resin but it pushed away the alcohol ink+iridescent resin away and the white ring down. On the second picture you'll see the white resin at the center (E) spreading through and the pushed down copper resin (D).

White resin spreading from the center. It was supposed to be just a ring around the gold foil center.

I was able to put some use to it by transforming it to a plant tray. So with this project, I have learned the following:

1. White is a dense pigment. White resin would sink & since resin flows, the white ring made around the coaster would move towards the center with some parts sinking (see under part).
2. The pigment used affects the density of the resin.
3. Clear poured over resin that hasn't cured yet will push it down.
4. If you desire to create structure on your resin coasters, don't use colors that have a similar color to each other. It could have the same hue but the tint, shade and tone difference should be significant. Alternatively, use one color and just use a gold accent in the center and/or add white outer rings.

And it will remain as a plant tray.

So that's it for this coaster! Hoping to create a better work next time.
